Model 3 Highland Exterior Parts: Fitment, Trims and the Camera Question
The Model 3 Highland looks like a facelift. Mechanically and structurally it is closer to a new car, and the aftermarket is still catching up. Listings routinely span "2017–2026 Model 3" as though one part could cover both generations, and a significant share of exterior parts sold that way will not fit a Highland. There is also a newer wrinkle that almost nobody has written about: not every Highland has the same front bumper hardware. Cars built from 2026 onward gained a front bumper camera that earlier Highlands do not have — and Tesla has indicated it is not available as a retrofit. That changes what you need to check before buying a front lip. This guide covers exterior parts. For the Model Y equivalent, see our Model Y Juniper fitment guide. Identify Your Car First Three separate questions, and you need all three answers. Question 1: Legacy or Highland? Highland — 2024 model year onward in the U.S., from late 2023 in China and Europe. Slimmer headlights with a sharper horizontal signature, a smoother front with no separate fog lamp housings, and a reshaped rear with a distinct tail light design. Legacy — 2017 to 2023. Rounder headlights, different bumper contours. From inside, the giveaway is immediate: the Highland launched without turn signal or gear selector stalks, using steering wheel buttons and touchscreen instead. Question 2: Standard or Performance? This one catches a lot of people. The Highland Performance has its own front bumper with an integrated splitter and different aerodynamics. It is not the same panel as a standard Highland. Parts made for a standard Highland front end will not fit a Highland Performance correctly, and vice versa. Reporting on fender liners for these cars notes the same thing — the Performance front end is different enough that even liners behind the bumper are likely unique. Question 3: Does your car have a front bumper camera? This is the newest variable and the one most listings have not caught up with. The Highland launched in China and Europe without a front bumper camera, and the U.S. version also arrived without one. Tesla has since made the front camera and washer system standard across its range, and production of the updated 2026 Model 3 Premium at Fremont includes both a front bumper camera and a turn signal stalk. The practical consequences: If your Highland is a 2024 or 2025 car, it most likely has no front bumper camera. A front lip only needs to clear the bumper shape. If your car is a 2026 build, check the lower centre of the front bumper for a small lens. If it is there, any front lip must leave the lens and its washer nozzle unobstructed. The camera is reportedly not offered as a retrofit for earlier cars, so this is a permanent difference between build years rather than something owners can add. Go and look at your own bumper. It takes ten seconds and it determines which parts are safe to fit. What Does Not Carry Over From Legacy to Highland Front lips, splitters and bumper trim. Different bumper geometry entirely. Rear diffusers and lower rear trim. The rear fascia was reshaped. Fender liners. Mounting points and shape differ; legacy liners cannot be secured properly. Pre-cut PPF templates. The front bumper and headlight areas changed, so legacy patterns do not cover correctly. Headlight and taillight covers or tints. Different light units, different shapes. Most interior accessories. Outside the scope of this guide, but worth knowing — the interior was extensively reworked. What Generally Does Carry Over Wheels. Bolt pattern and offsets are unchanged. Mirror caps. The mirror housings were not redesigned. Jack pads. Some decals and window louvers, where the glass shape is unchanged. Check each listing — rear window louvers are commonly listed for 2017–2024, which spans both generations, while side window louver decals for the Highland are sold as 2024+. Note also that suspension and chassis hardware is a mixed picture. Specialist suppliers have found much of their catalogue carries over, but with exceptions — for example, the 2024 car uses a different front sway bar bracket, so some sway bar kits require the earlier brackets. Do not assume undercar parts cross over just because body parts do. A Word on the Lit Diffuser Diffusers with integrated lighting are popular on the Highland, and they introduce the one genuine warranty risk in this article: anything spliced into the vehicle's electrical system. If you fit one, fuse the circuit close to the power source, use weatherproof connectors, and route the harness away from heat and moving parts. A poorly executed electrical installation is the modification most plausibly linked to an electrical fault later. Also check local regulations on rear lighting colour and placement before fitting, because rules on auxiliary lights vary considerably by jurisdiction. Reading Listings Without Getting Burned Treat "2017–2026 Model 3" as a warning sign on any bumper, lip or diffuser. That range spans two different cars. Look for "Highland" or a 2024+ year split in the title, not buried in the description. State your trim. Standard and Performance front ends differ. Say whether you have the front bumper camera. If the seller does not know what you mean, their front-end parts were not developed against a 2026 car. Compare product photos to your own car — headlight shape is the fastest tell. For PPF, confirm the pattern file year with the installer before the car goes up. Installation Notes Most Highland exterior parts bond with automotive-grade tape. Strip any ceramic coating from the bonding area. Tape bonds to whatever it touches, and a coating will eventually release with the part attached to it. Work above roughly 15°C. Cold installations lift at the corners weeks later. Dry fit and mark with masking tape before peeling any backing. You get one accurate attempt. Press firmly along the whole length. These tapes are pressure-activated; contact alone is not a bond. Wait at least 24 hours before washing, and keep pressure washers off the edges afterwards. After any front-end work on a camera-equipped car, confirm the camera view and that driver assistance features behave normally before you finish. Quick Facts Highland = 2024+ in the U.S., late 2023 in China and Europe. Identify by the slim headlights and the absence of stalks inside. Highland Performance has a unique front bumper with an integrated splitter — standard Highland front parts do not fit it. 2026 builds add a front bumper camera with a washer, reportedly not retrofittable to earlier cars. Check your own bumper. Do not carry over: front lips, diffusers, fender liners, PPF templates, light covers. Generally carry over: wheels, mirror caps, jack pads, some decals. Undercar parts are a mixed picture — the 2024 car uses a different front sway bar bracket, for example. Frequently Asked Questions Will pre-2024 Model 3 parts fit a Highland? Exterior body parts, generally no. Front lips, diffusers, fender liners, PPF templates and light covers are all generation-specific. Wheels, mirror caps and jack pads typically carry over. Does my Model 3 Highland have a front bumper camera? Most 2024 and 2025 Highlands do not. Updated 2026 production includes one. Look for a small lens low in the centre of the front bumper — that is the definitive check. Can I add the front bumper camera to an older Highland? Reporting indicates Tesla is not offering it as a retrofit, unlike the turn signal stalk, which is available as a paid retrofit. Do standard Highland parts fit the Highland Performance? Not at the front. The Performance has its own bumper with an integrated splitter and different aerodynamics. Are Highland and Model Y Juniper parts interchangeable? No. They are different vehicles with different body panels. Some accessories designed around shared interior components overlap, but exterior body parts do not. Do I need to tell the seller anything besides the year? Yes — trim (standard or Performance) and whether your car has the front bumper camera. Year alone is no longer sufficient for front-end parts.
