Dry Carbon vs Standard Carbon — Why It Matters on the F90 M5

Standard (wet-lay) carbon fiber uses a hand-layup process where carbon fabric is saturated with resin in an open mould. Dry carbon (prepreg) uses carbon fabric pre-impregnated with a precise resin-to-fiber ratio and cured under heat and pressure in an autoclave. The result is a higher fiber-to-resin ratio, lower void content, and greater strength-to-weight ratio compared to wet-lay carbon. BMW M GmbH's own M Carbon package for the F90 M5 — including the M Carbon roof, engine bay strut brace cover, and mirror caps — uses CFRP construction consistent with prepreg dry carbon specification, validating dry carbon as the appropriate material grade for F90 M5 exterior components.
