Ferrari has revealed the 296 Speciale, a more track-focused version of its acclaimed 296 GTB hybrid supercar. Arriving almost simultaneously with its fiercest rival, the Lamborghini Temerario, the Speciale faces a genuinely tough comparison right out of the gate.
More Power, Less Weight
The 296 Speciale builds on the standard 296 GTB with more power, reduced weight, and increased downforce - the classic Ferrari "Speciale" formula the brand has applied to previous generations of mid-engine cars. On paper, though, several of its headline numbers are outpointed by the Lamborghini Temerario, which offers more power, all-wheel drive versus the Ferrari's rear-wheel-drive layout, and a screaming, rev-to-10 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8.
Where the Ferrari Fights Back
Despite trailing on some spec-sheet numbers, the 296 Speciale holds a genuine advantage in weight: Ferrari's claimed dry weight comes in roughly 620 lbs lighter than the Temerario, despite the Ferrari's battery capacity being nearly twice as large - a testament to Ferrari's chassis and packaging engineering. That weight advantage translates to a car reviewers describe as more agile and engaging in the corners, even if it can't match the Lamborghini's straight-line numbers.
The Engine Difference
The 296 Speciale uses a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 delivering peak power at a relatively low 8,000 rpm and sending drive exclusively to the rear wheels - a very different philosophy from the Temerario's all-wheel-drive, higher-revving V8 setup.
Pricing
Both cars are expected to carry same-ballpark pricing once the implications of current tariffs are fully worked out, keeping the comparison a genuinely close one for buyers deciding between the two.
A Plug-In Hybrid Club
The 296 Speciale joins the McLaren Artura and Lamborghini Temerario as part of a small but growing club of plug-in hybrid supercars, each taking a distinctly different engineering approach to combining electrification with genuine track performance.
Looking Ahead
With the Temerario reaching buyers at nearly the same time as the 296 Speciale, 2026 is shaping up to be one of the most direct head-to-head supercar rivalries in recent memory - and one that's likely to be closely watched by enthusiasts and reviewers alike as independent comparison testing rolls out.
